Kidadl: User Profile

Overview

As the product designer at Kidadl, I have led the UI/UX process of the complex user profile that encouraged parents to connect with similar families on the website. The platform would also allow users to save everything from articles and famous people to quotes and events into personalised lists.

Kidadl's next step into becoming the ultimate platform for families was to build a profile section which allows users to not only fully personalise their browsing experience, but to also socialise with parents similar to them. Drawing inspiration from other established social networks, and focusing on the family content that matters, the global content on the main website would link to the social platform seamlessly.

The Structure

The profile would feature 5 different areas:

1) the classic feed, where a user would get suggested content based on their interests and family as well as updates on other users' activity;

2) the idea boards, where saved items could be divided into lists to keep everything tidy,

3) the achievements, where items marked as 'achieved' would result in receiving different rewards,

4) the list of followers and finally,

5) the list of people the user follows (Following).

Onboarding

Thanks to the onboarding process, where the user selects their family interests (a categorisation system available on all content on Kidadl) and further personal details, their feed would be tailored to their personality and family members. Complex user flows were built to make sure that the onboarding covers all aspects of user type; after all, the platform is not reserved only for parents; childfree aunts or uncles, retired grandparents or even childcare professionals are all possible user personas that can create a Kidadl account.

To avoid any confusion from the user's side regarding the functionality of the account, I provided a step by step walkthrough of the lists and a quick interaction with content before completing the onboarding.

Every step of the profile creation was created on both desktop and mobile screens given how 60% if the website users access it on smaller screens.

Boards

Idea Boards are a great feature for parents with a full schedule, from family dinners to school meetings and rehearsals. When browsing the Kidadl articles and something catches your eye, just save it for later, be it an article that you want to read, an exciting cake recipe or an event you'd like to take your little ones to. Collaborators can be added to the boards, making it easy to share your ideas with your extended family or friends.

These can be later on marked as 'Achieved' which will add to your achievements later on your profile.

Reflections

This account process was such a tricky issue to approach; looking back on it, a wireframe stage and even a sitemap would've been definitely useful in the long run and would prevent further difficulties along the line. At this stage I was still at a learning point of my career, with a restricted timeline within a start-up environment. Many improvements could be made, but that's what progress looks like after all!
